Halo with Iain

Iain came by last night and Michael, Ronnie and I all played Halo with him. I hosted an internet game on my PC, and Peter (Hell’s Chicken) joined in for most of the evening. It was a lot of fun!

We also had a number of “random internet people” joining in (as we call them). Usually there were about 6 people playing. We tried to play “vehicles only”, where everyone gets in a Warthog (see picture) and smashes into each other. Hilarity ensues.

We may be playing again tonight. Anyone up for some fun?

Next Generation Blog

I’ve been looking around for my a good, Rails-based blog and I’ve found one called Typo. It uses AJAX, the same “Web 2.0″ technology used by Google for things like Gmail and Google Maps.

Of course, in order to use it, I will have to get Rails working on tnir, which I haven’t been able to do to this point. The main sticking point seems to be getting “FastCGI” working properly. An alternative is to try using lighthttpd instead of Apache.

I dunno, we’ll see. If all else fails, I can always use a hosting place like DreamHost, which has built-in support for both Rails and Typo. Cool.

I’m using Digg

I’ve set myself up a Digg.com account and am playing with it. If anyone else is on Digg let me know so I can try adding you to my friends list.

The idea is that you can see what stories your friends think are interesting. When you look at a story you can click on a button next to it to say you “digg” the story. This is an asynchronous action (using AJAX tech), so it doesn’t invade the flow of reading the stories.

You can subscribe to your friends’ feeds, and other people’s feeds willy-nilly of course. If enough people digg a story, it appears on the main page of news for the day. Users of the site write all the stories, so it’s much less centrally-controlled than even Slashdot.

Andy’s party

Luisa and Bronwyn in the kitchen

We went to Andy’s place on Saturday for his annual BBQ party. There was the usual 3 people/sq metre density and the screaming gaggle of girls in the basement. I must say that Andy’s shirt was unusually .. well, *orange*!

Andy seems unsure of his orange shirt

Luisa and I got a chance to see Bronwyn, who we don’t get to see very often AT ALL. She’s a Montréal girl now, so she only flies into town on occasion, y’see. Turns out she will be in India for pretty much all of 2006. Egad!

Oh, you can see my pics if you like.

Sky High

Took Ronnie and Michael to see Sky High today. I’d never heard of it, which is unusual, as it involves superheroes. However, these were definitely campy heroes, so there was really no reason I would have heard of it. :-) I’m waiting for V for Vendetta for something a bit darker in this area.

Wetstock 2005

I’m not sure who’s arm that is, but I’m definitely squirting them (large version on Flickr.com)

We held our annual pool party, a.k.a. “Wetstock 2005″, on the weekend of July 23rd, and proceeded to have much fun and frolic. The weather was great: sunny and warm.

Great shot of Debbie (large)

Michael manned his traditional water-bombing post, but Luisa got the most spectacular bombardment in when she rolled a water balloon off of the deck roof, catching her victim (and everyone else!) completely by surprise.
